Getting A Handicap
How to Get a Handicap at Nenagh Golf Club
A golf handicap is your official measure of playing ability. It’s designed to make the game fair, so players of different standards can compete on equal terms. Without handicaps, golf competitions would mostly reward only the strongest golfers. With handicaps, every player – beginner to experienced – has a realistic chance.
A handicap is also one of the best ways to measure your progress. As you practice and your scores improve, your handicap generally comes down, showing that you’re getting better. It turns improvement into something you can track, and it gives you clear goals to aim for.
Most importantly at Nenagh Golf Club, having a handicap is what allows you to take part fully in club golf. Once a junior (or any new golfer) has a handicap, they can enter club competitions, record official scores, and become part of the structured golfing side of the club. Getting your first handicap is a big milestone – it marks the move from casual rounds to proper competitive golf.
The two ways to qualify for your first handicap
At Nenagh, you can get your initial handicap by submitting either:
-
Option A: 3 x 18-hole scorecards, or
-
Option B: 6 x 9-hole scorecards (3 front nines and 3 back nines)
Both options follow the same principles: the scores must be genuine, the cards must be completed properly, and they must be verified by a marker who already holds an official Golf Ireland handicap.
Step-By-Step Process
Step 1: Play your qualifying rounds
Choose one of the two options:
Option A (18-hole):
Play three separate 18-hole rounds.
Option B (9-hole):
Play six separate 9-hole rounds, made up of:
-
3 x Front 9 (holes 1–9), and
-
3 x Back 9 (holes 10–18)
These rounds should be played seriously, following the Rules of Golf as best you can. The goal is to show a true picture of your current standard.
Step 2: Complete the scorecard correctly
For each round, fill out a standard scorecard clearly and neatly. Make sure it includes:
-
Your name
-
The date
-
Hole-by-hole scores
Accurate cards help avoid delays and make it easy for the Handicap Secretary to assess your scores. Just enter the amount of stroke you hit on a hole, no need to caluclate points when acquiring a handicap.
Step 3: Get the card signed by the right person
Every card must be signed by a player who holds a Golf Ireland handicap. This signature is important because it confirms the round was played properly and that the score is reliable.
Step 4: Submit your completed cards
Once you have all your required cards (either 3 x 18-hole or 6 x 9-hole), submit them to the club using the ‘New Handicap Cards’ box in the Men’s and Women’s lobbies.
Step 5: Handicap Secretary allocates your handicap
After your cards are submitted, the Handicap Secretary will review your scores and determine an appropriate starting handicap based on the evidence from your rounds. This helps ensure your handicap is fair to you and to other players in competitions.
Step 6: Enter club competitions
Once your handicap is issued, the junior can then play in club competitions and begin posting official scores. From there, your handicap becomes part of your golfing journey – updating over time as you play, learn, and improve.
